Vardon is a true hero, not only for his great achievements in the game, but also for the fact that he managed to become a professional golfer at all. Born in Jersey in 1870, he did not come from a privileged background, largely a prerequisite for success at that time, and was very fortunate to be given firstly the opportunity and secondly the encouragement to develop his natural talent.
