La Moye Golf Club was the unique setting for the Jersey Seniors Open, a course laid out in 1902 by George Boomer Headmaster of La Moye School who had previously taught both Harry Vardon and Ted Ray at the Grouville Primary School. George Boomer's sons Aubrey and Percy had illustrious professional Golf Careers. Aubrey was a member of the first Ryder Cup team encounter in 1927 with fellow Jerseyman Ted Ray Captaining the home winning team. Aubrey is unique in that he is still the only player to have won the French Open on no less that five occasions.

Competing was another well respected Jersey golfing son in the form of Tommy Horton who apart from his Ryder Cup appearances in 1975 - 1977, holds the record of five European Seniors Tour Order of Merit wins for the John Jacobs Trophy. Tommy acted as an ambassador for Harry Vardon International sporting golfing apparel with the distinctive Harry Vardon logo and signature.

107th US Open

Argentinean Angel Cabrera wins the 107th US Open Championship at Oakmont Country Club.

Cabrera out duelled Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk to become the first Argentinan to win the US Open and the second to win a Major Championship. He joins Roberto de Vicenzo who won the British Open in 1967.

So once again a British player has not been successful in winning this traditionally tough set up Major.

Harry Vardon was the first British player to win the US Open at Wheaton GC, Chicago in 1900. And the only subsequent British players to go on to win the US Open interestingly both have a connection with Jersey too!

The next winner in 1920 was Vardon's fellow Jerseyman, Ted Ray, who just piped Vardon by one shot at Inverness, Ohio.

The only other British player was Tony Jacklin who won the British Open in 1969 and went on to win the 1970 US Open at Hazeltine, Minnesota, by an incredible 7 shot winning margin. The financial success that accompanied these wins allowed Jacklin to move to Jersey to take advantage of being a low tax area! Jacklin stayed on the Island for some ten years before stays in Scotland and Spain and on to Florida where he now lives.
